The sibling restaurant to Uchi doesn't coast on family name. Uchiko on North Lamar has carved out its own identity with a daily happy hour from 4 to 6pm featuring select cool and hot tastings, signature tastings for two, temaki, and okashi alongside discounted beer, wine, and sake.
The tasting format is smart. It lets you sample across the menu without the full omakase commitment, and the execution stays at the level you'd expect from this kitchen. The temaki is a good entry point; the sake pairings make it better.
North Austin doesn't have a ton of places operating at this level, which makes Uchiko happy hour feel like something you lucked into. The space is calm and precise without being stiff.
