Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM, all domestic beers drop to $3 and tequila drinks get $3 knocked off. The appetizer menu also takes a $3 hit across the board, which makes the guac and queso situation pretty easy to justify.
The space on Trinity Street is colorful and warm without being kitschy. It reads more like a restaurant that happens to have a great bar than the other way around. The kitchen does solid, no-frills Mexican food, and the tequila selection backs up the drink program.
Iron Cactus happy hour pulls a real cross-section of downtown Austin. You'll see post-work groups, tourists who stumbled into something good, and regulars who've figured out that $3 domestics and discounted margaritas at 3 PM on a Tuesday is a solid life choice. The patio fills up fast when the weather cooperates.
